Q 15# Coffee to go

You’ve decided to expand your little coffee business. Your shop near Hosei is doing well, and your 2 assistant managers are pretty independent. You don’t have the extra capital to open another shop, so instead you are going to add 2 mobile units that can supply coffee at different loacations.

Location

 You haven’t decided yet whether you should;

1) move the carts to different locations depending on the time of day

2) have them remain in one location where hopefully you’ll get enough foot traffic all day

Schedule

Also, you are considering, should you

1) have the cart be open all day

2) have it open for morning and lunch time only

3) or some other schedule

You need to decide as you have already purchased the carts and they are being delivered next week.

Workers

In addition, who should you hire to work on the carts;

1) hire experienced workers away from another company (offer more money)

2) hire unveristy employees and train them

3) hire retired people and train them

4) hire your relatives who need a job and train them

5) move some of your in-store employees on the cart

6) hire whomever and train them

List your decsions and your reasons for them.

  1. Akio Fujiwara Says:

First, I am going to choose number1 in location. it is obvious that there are many people near a station in the moring, near business area in lunch time. this is why I think that number1 is the best way in the options.
second, let me choose number2 in schedule because the primary purpose of this project is to make more money. therefore, I don’t think that it is efficient to walk around all day. is there many potential customers in evening when most businessperson go home.
third, I am confident about my idea in workers section. I will hire university students in Hosei because they can be an advertisement in the university, and they will take new student customers as well. university students are the key to success in this challenging attempt.

  2. Takeshi Sumi Says:

About location, I’ll chose 1. This is because I think the place where there are people who tend to drink a coffee is changed depend on the time of day, for example on morning we should sell a coffee in the place where there are so many housewives who are chating each other after they finished their own housework. I guess these housewives want to drink a coffee while they are watching morning TV shows on this time of morning. At noon or in the evening, we should sell a coffee in the place where there are many business people who have just finished their morning jobs or evening jobs and want to have break while drinking a coffee or work overtime while drinking a coffee somewhere.
About schedule I’ll chose 1. As I mention, I want to sell a coffee all day like that.
About workers I’ll chose 3. This is becuse I’ll usually make them sell a coffee to business people so if I hire them, they know very well the place where business people tend to go at noon or after they finish their jobs and the time when they want to have break because they were business people in the past.

  3. kasmersensei Says:

Akio, I have to wonder, are you sure you’d operate the carts near your coffee shop (you mentioned that uni students are key)? Wouldn’t you be taking away some of your own business?

  4. emiko kodama Says:

    location-2
if we move everyday, people dont know where we are. even they want to get our coffee they cant find us.
    schedule-2 + night time
night time is for business persons who work untill late night. they need coffee to keep thier awake.
    wokers-6
this job wouldnt be difficult that much. we can train whoever we hire and save money.

  5. Itsumi Asakawa Says:

    Location 2)
For employees, it’s better not to move the carts locations depending on the time. If it moves, it’s not convinient to get to work.
For customers, If you want to grab our coffee but we are not there, it is so disappointing. Besides, we wanna get customers who always buy our coffee.
    Schedule 1)
I’m gonna hire employees with daily wages.
    Workers 6)
We sure need some new employees so doesnt matter who works for us.

  6. Misato Abe Says:

For location, I choose 1) for exactly the same reasons Akio and Takeshi says. For schedule, my choice is 3). We do not need to open it during lunch, because people seek food rather than drink during lunch time. Therefore, my ideal time for cart is morning and afternoon (especially around 2 pm to 5 pm). In that way, it is very convenient for people who need drink just before they start work or who need some miutes’ break.
Lastly, about worker, I think 5) is the best. I think we do not need to hire extra person for the cart.

  7. kasmersensei Says:

    Misato,

If you pull people from the store to work the carts, the danger is that our service at the store will suffer. Certainly those people will be used to making coffee, though the machinery may be slightly different as well as the profiles of the customers might be slightly different, which might make these people less than ideal. Just like some teachers who are ideal for teaching uni classes may be less than ideal to teach businesspeople.

    Itsumi,

If the location remains the same, will we be able to have enough customers to serve all day?

  8. shihmin-chaung Says:

    About location
I choose nomber 1. Move the carts to different locations is nice idea.
Because, I can move to anywhere that there are many people locations.
    About schedule
I choose number 3. In reality, I don’t think people use coffee shop in the morning. If I need coffee in the morning, I’ll use vending machine.
So,I’ll let it open for lunch time and teatime.
    About workers
I don’t care what kind of workers. If they have a higher motivation.
